He meets with Mearn in the wilds, and receives a packet of smuggled Alliance documents to be delivered to Arithon. Third Age 5653: Maenol and his men are camped 14 leagues south of Hanshire when Mearn risks finding him to warn of betrayal at Riverton. Based on the shared intelligence, Maenol orders his men to delay reinforcements from Avenor (taking a stand near Mogg's Fen, while breaking through a cordon around Riverton to warn Arithon. Maenol receives maps showing Etarran troop movements from Mearn, but chooses to remain in Tysan at the risk of being overrun to uphold the land's charter. He nurses Mearn back to health and sends him away with a plea to King Eldir to beg sanctuary in Havish for clan survivors, along with responsibility for his heir, Ianfar s'Gannley.

Maenol continues to defend his clansmen along Mainmere Bay while waiting for word from Eldir. He remains on the run with help from the fenlanders while his men await news of the imminent blockade. Luhaine delivers word that the three ships have been recaptured by Arithon's allies, and that King Eldir has granted sanctuary to clansmen in Havish. Maenol decides that every surviving clan bloodline will maintain a secure branch on foreign soil from this point on.
